ITINERARY: After breakfast we begin another incredible journey, walking through the heart of Cambodia’s rural landscapes, where local life, ancient history, and stunning natural beauty seamlessly intertwine. Our path takes us through charming villages, lush rice paddies, an ancient lost temple, a colorful pagoda, and vibrant farmlands, offering a glimpse into the traditions and daily rhythms of the Cambodian countryside. Our experience begins with a visit to a family making traditional bamboo sticky rice, known as “Kralan.” This delicious Cambodian delicacy is prepared by slow-cooking a mix of rice, coconut milk, and beans inside bamboo tubes over an open fire, creating a flavourful treat deeply embedded in local culinary culture. Continuing our walk, we arrive at the ancient lost temple of Prasat Kamrieng, nestled in the middle of the paddy fields and surrounded by towering palm trees. Time has left its mark on this hidden gem, but its beauty remains, whispering stories of Cambodia’s past. Moving forward, we reach the colorful monastery of Wat Kchas, a serene and spiritual site where monks practice their daily rituals, adding to the tranquility of our surroundings. At Kok Sangke village, we immerse ourselves in the rich traditions of rural Cambodian life. Here, we witness a variety of village activities, each playing a vital role in sustaining the local community. We stop by a blacksmith family’s workshop, where skills have been passed down through three generations. Watching the blacksmith at work, shaping tools essential for farming, provides a powerful insight into the craftsmanship that supports agricultural life. As we walk through the village, we may also come across families engaged in rice wine making, raising livestock such as pigs, chickens, and ducks, crafting intricate woven goods, creating palm sugar (when in season), and tending to rice fields—each element forming a part of Cambodia’s deeply rooted agrarian culture. After a morning of cultural discovery, we take time to enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by a local women’s association. Seated in the peaceful surroundings of paddy fields, a tranquil lake, and swaying palm trees, we soak in the beauty of this serene environment while savouring a delicious, home-cooked meal. In the afternoon, our journey continues to Wat Lorm Proleung, an ancient pagoda, where we are welcomed by a group of local musicians performing the traditional Chhai Yam dance. The rhythmic beats and graceful movements of this energetic performance bring to life the joy and vibrancy of Cambodian heritage. Before we leave, we participate in a special monk blessing ceremony, a sacred and meaningful ritual that offers well wishes and good fortune—an unforgettable way to conclude our time in the community. As the day winds down, we make our way to Kampong Khleang, a fascinating village built on stilts along Tonle Sap Lake. Home to around 10,000 residents, Kampong Khleang thrives on fishing and seasonal agriculture, with life on the lake changing dramatically depending on the time of year. Depending on the season, the lake’s water levels will reveal either towering stilt houses or vast expanses of floating homes, creating a dynamic landscape unique to this region. As the sun sets, we gather for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, reflecting on the experiences, connections, and memories made throughout our journey.
